When making enterprise decisions look beyond the initial cost and consider total cost of ownership (TCO), usability and user experience. While current cost is an important line item it shouldn’t be the main (or only) factor to consider when deciding which systems or services to implement or who to hire and promote. Look at the overall value that particular enterprise …
How I tracked and recovered a stolen iPhone
This past weekend my wife’s iPhone was stolen from a store in Secaucus, NJ. While in store, she placed it down to try on a pair of shoes and then moved an isle down to take a look at another item which was long enough for the phone to “disappear”. Once she realized that she was missing her phone it …
How reliable and responsive is your local IT team
Most technology services used at work, school, or home are looked at by users as commodity services, similar to water and electricity, they are simply expected to be available and work properly. When it comes to network; access to websites, chat services, e-mail (from both computers and smartphones – iPhone, Android, Windows based phones…) along with many other services are …
Digsby stuck at “loading skin” screen
My morning started with this issue for which there is a simple solution. Go to C:\Users\(your windows user name)\AppData\Local\Digsby\cache\(your digsby user name)_cache\digsbyblobs and delete all files in that directory. Restart Digsby and it should work like a charm (it will recreate deleted files btw at start-up). NOTE This worked on Windows 7 Enterprise and Digsby – Build 27225. Also, if …
Know what your project needs
Recently I came across several project proposals where I was asked to evaluate technical components (hardware, software and staffing needs) and found a few items worth sharing. Several items in these proposals weren’t adequately priced (difference from list and actual price on select items was as high as 60%). Furthermore, some hardware models have been discontinued years ago. While certain …
Extending the life of your computer 101
Over the years I have seen numerous examples of poor computer use and maintenance ranging from simply outdated applications to damaged hardware by water, coffee, soda, fire…you name it. In hopes that at least a few people will read this and by doing so improve their own computing experience I have put together a little guide on basic, somewhat fundamental …
Anti-Virus software
In today’s world where network and system security is of great importance and we live and operate behind firewalls, VPNs, SSH, encryption, anti-virus software and many other tools that help make us more secure, it is often difficult figuring out that winning combo to stay safe online and protect your personal information. One component that in a sense started it …
Selecting the most valuable conference to attend
It’s been a while since I went to a real professional conference (been to a number of one day seminars, presentations and demos), but not a real targeted conference. I think it’s time to change this and become more involved in the technology world outside my immediate area. Also, considering that I’m planning to introduce additional improvements within our team …
Please talk to your IT staff
When purchasing new hardware, software of have questions about a particular technology please consult your IT staff (if available to you of course) prior to making the purchase. Having someone with a bit more technical experience and knowledge take a look at your specifications and technology needs can be of great help in the long run. If nothing else, it’s …
Firefox 3.5.x has been a disaster so far
Love Firefox, but not a fan of their latest version. It’s been crashing left and right, slow, unresponsive, buggy and to be honest more than a bit annoying.
