Motivating employees

For teams to be effective and efficient people must be motivated to contribute and do their best. Motivating can take various forms and shapes, but it always comes down to the following fundamental concepts:

  1. Comfort – people need to feel comfortable at work
  2. Variety – people want variety in their work and responsibilities
  3. Contribution & significance – their work must be relevant and have specific, tangible, measurable contributions
  4. Connection – people need to feel connected to the culture and environment
  5. Growth – people want to grow, learn and advance

By establishing and promoting the above listed criteria you will begin the necessary shift towards people wanting to contribute, not being required to do so. Additionally, some of the guiding ideas that go a long way towards team morale and motivation are:

  • Pay employees accordingly and make work interesting, rewarding, fun
  • People need to have autonomy, control and make progress (they need purpose)
  • Establish creative, inviting environment with personal accountability
  • Collaborate and communicate
  • Best ideas must win
  • Provide opportunities
  • Teamwork is essential
  • Spread the work equally
  • Don’t penalize your best performers
