Geotagging your life online? Be careful.

Geotagging and location based services are all the rage these days. While they are very useful at times, these features should not be taken for granted nor should they be enabled on all of your devices and applications. Certain parts of your life are meant to be private and they should remain that way. Geotagging every move online for all to see could pose serious security and safety concerns.

  1. Remember this site: http://pleaserobme.com/

It made big news few years ago by polling services such as foursqare to identify empty houses (ie. all people who claimed to live in that house were currently checked somewhere else) around you.

This is one of the reasons why I don’t geo-tag anything. That and I actually live in a rather small town. If you have my name, and the name of my town you can find me fairly easily.

  2. 🙂 Thanks for sharing that link, I forgot that there’s a whole site dedicated to this concern…it clearly makes the point to keep your location private.

Recently, I read about numerous examples of people getting both robbed and confronted by some unfriendly characters from the past which is not something anyone wants to deal with. I figured most folks who tag everything they do simply might not realize that sharing their location could have deeper consequences.
