This past weekend my wife’s iPhone was stolen from a store in Secaucus, NJ. While in store, she placed it down to try on a pair of shoes and then moved an isle down to take a look at another item which was long enough for the phone to “disappear”. Once she realized that she was missing her phone it …
Geotagging your life online? Be careful.
Geotagging and location based services are all the rage these days. While they are very useful at times, these features should not be taken for granted nor should they be enabled on all of your devices and applications. Certain parts of your life are meant to be private and they should remain that way. Geotagging every move online for all …
Flash is dead, HTML5 considered prime suspect
Flash is dead and here’s why. Last week, Adobe released Wallaby, a tool which converts Flash files into HTML5 to reach more (mobile) devices. When the creators of Flash are providing free tools to convert their proprietary format into an open, standards friendly alternative (HTML5) it’s safe to say that Adobe Flash is on its way out. It all started …
Internet Explorer 9 is here to compete
Internet Explorer (IE) 9 was released on Monday night and having used it a bit this week I can confidently say that it is a clear improvement over previous versions. The main improvement I noticed so far (besides obvious visual design enhancements) is its speed. It’s fast! This is in part accomplished with better operating system (OS) integration (I run …
How reliable and responsive is your local IT team
Most technology services used at work, school, or home are looked at by users as commodity services, similar to water and electricity, they are simply expected to be available and work properly. When it comes to network; access to websites, chat services, e-mail (from both computers and smartphones – iPhone, Android, Windows based phones…) along with many other services are …
Google social search
About a week ago I noticed (as I’m sure many of you did) a new feature of Google Search, Social Search (BETA). It basically leverages your Google Profile and the information you provided to expand your search into online posts of those you consider friends, followers, etc. While this is another great advancement coming from Google inline toward the “ultimate” …
4 FREE and SECURE online backup services
Internet is filled with dozens of online backup/storage services which provide different levels of functionality, reliability, security and space to users. In order to cut through some of this clutter here are four online services that I have used and found to be reliable, functional and secure. While putting this short list together I focused on three requirements: services had …
Optimum Online phishing attempt
Here’s another phishing attempt that got into one of my e-mail accounts, this time undetected by several anti-spam mechanisms in place. It’s an easy phishing scam to detect by a trained (or even a bit more detailed oriented) eye, but considering that it didn’t get tagged as spam it could make some users fall for it and therefore share their …
Digsby stuck at “loading skin” screen
My morning started with this issue for which there is a simple solution. Go to C:\Users\(your windows user name)\AppData\Local\Digsby\cache\(your digsby user name)_cache\digsbyblobs and delete all files in that directory. Restart Digsby and it should work like a charm (it will recreate deleted files btw at start-up). NOTE This worked on Windows 7 Enterprise and Digsby – Build 27225. Also, if …
Windows XP Mode in Windows 7
I have recently moved my primary work laptop to 64-bit Windows 7 Enterprise and while I am overall pleased with the operating system (OS) I found that some apps which didn’t run on Vista don’t work on 7 either. Some of those which I use frequently are Timbuktu Pro and a custom built application to manage user access permissions on …
