Recently we have witnessed an amazing turn of events for a man who was homeless and now has a job and a house all thanks to his amazing voice, good people and the power of internet.

While this is the latest example which left a powerful impression on me, it is not the only one where technology (alongside good people) helped spread the word quickly and eventually provided assistance to those in need. I love this particular story, it made me smile, made me feel good about people and their compassion for a fellow human in need. Stories such as this one about Ted Williams are fairly rare, but I hope that will change considering that people helping each other should be the norm, not the exception.

Yesterday, little after 5 pm as I was leaving work I saw a girl (I assume a student at MSU) waiting for an elevator on the third floor. That on its own is a normal occurrence, it happens all the time, but what made this a bit different was one of her “fashion accessories”. It’s not her hair (even though it was very unique, kind of DIY style), nor was it her overall outfit. It wasn’t even her belt made out of empty bullet shells. What really got my attention and made me snap this picture was a white rat with red eyes on her left shoulder.

Yes, it was a live rat, just hanging on her shoulder. At that moment an elevator arrived, doors opened and for a second I contemplated taking the stairs. In any event, I walk in and while pretending to be cool, calm and collected like nothing was happening watched her rat walk on her shoulders. This two flight elevator ride felt like eternity and once the doors finally opened on the first floor she walk out towards the main entrance of the building while I was walking backwards towards my car and observing people’s reactions as she was passing them by. Talk about being unique.

Over the past couple of weeks majority of my time was spent on getting plans in order to be able to do some home renovations, improvements and a small addition. The level of detail required to get permits to do work on your own house is unbelievable. I get that everyone has to get their cut, but it still seems like a lot of work to get a piece of paper allowing me to do make these fairly minor changes to the house I pay for.

Sorry for the brief rant, but I had to share. Hopefully, tomorrow I’ll be in a better mood and be able to focus on things that actually make sense.

I’ve just been asked to reset an account password on a computer used by a faculty member who recently passed away. It was a strange feeling to see this individual a week ago and now she’s gone. Her office was filled with papers, assignments and books she was working on. It’s a sobering experience and makes you pause a bit, realize that most things we get upset over are really not that serious.

Cherish your lives and lives of those around you. You never know how much of them is left and what you have in front of you.

Backgrounds on people’s computers are always an interesting thing to see. They range from a solid color to some weird and usual pattern to photos of their loved ones to their favorite vacation spots.

I normally enjoy nice photos of nature and space, I enjoy seeing photos of Earth from space as it gives me a whole another perspective on life and our place in the universe. Well, not really, while all that sounded good, but I simply enjoy photos of stars, planets and galaxies.

My laptop’s background is just that, a photo of Earth from space. As I also have a monitor at work I placed a different background on it, a photo of Santorini (Fira, the capital). Come to think of it, these two photos have been my backgrounds for quite a while, maybe it is time to add new photos into the mix.

While I go search for some cool, calming and relaxing photos let me know what is your desktop’s background, why did you select it and how frequently do you change them?

Due to a snow storm we were off work today. That on its own is a bit unexpected considering that our university is almost always open, but I’ll take what I can get.

Having all this extra time was used to sleep in and then catch up on some personal and family errands. I ended up sending out paperwork; helping my dad with a few online poem submissions (he’s very good, but all in Serbian, sorry) and putting final touches on our terms of service (TOS) page (site going live in a couple of days if all goes well).

All in all, it was a day of mixed productivity and relaxing. Extra day off came in handy to recharge for tomorrow and a busy work week ahead. Luckily we now have only four days left.

My next goal is to be as productive tomorrow, at work. Let you know how that goes.

It’s past 9 PM and I’ve been so busy that I forgot to eat dinner, off to grab something now. Hopefully you have enjoyed your day off as well (if in the Northeast U.S.).
