Challenge yourself

by Milos Topic on September 2, 2009

Hearing people make comments such as “does he know what he’s getting himself into” and “wow, that’s a lot of work” makes me ask myself the following question: Since when is hard work and desire to help make things better frowned upon?

Outside of the work issue, I completely know what you are saying about others saying “wow, that’s a lot of work” or something along those lines, and being negative about hard endeavors you take on. I’m about to embark on training for a 100 mile race…the looks and comments I get from people amaze me. Most people, rather than say, “That’s Awesome…I wish the you best…” are more like “You are crazy…that’s too much work…yada yada yada.” You really do need to challenge yourself in life, otherwise you become complacent, boring, and in some cases, obsolete.

Kudos to you for undertaking more service for this council. The negative comments should just be ignored as they were just an excuse for others who aren’t up for any new challenges. I whole-heartedly agree with Matt about the consequences of lack of challenge. (btw @Matt, that is awesome!)
Simply put, I find that people are motivated to act, participate, engage only if there is a financial incentive associated with it. And then, even when they are “motivated”, they put in minimal effort and don’t really care.
These days, blood, sweat and tears only count if they’re seen on a tv or movie screen, or a computer monitor.

Had to be the same lazy faculty who signed up for the senate only for CV filler; the one who only give you the 1 hour window, on 1 of the 2 days they come to campus, as their available time to meet. Tenure, gotta love it.

I believe the problem may lie with people only believing that others can only do as much work as they currently can and for those people the amount of work that they do is only within their comfort zone. Others live off of the laurels of their glory but somehow don’t recognize that they too once put out such tremendous effort and accomplished great feats. The fact that you are surrounded by people who must have sacrificed so much to get where they are, I would have thought that they would be more encouraging to your youthful energy and desires.

I believe in the President’s speech she asked members of the community to meet the difficult challenges that we face as an opportunity. That we should make the campus better even though others do not believe we can. With that in mind I feel that it is a good thing that you are on any committee where you can contribute, because you have never been one to keep quiet when you know something isn’t going right.
