Help me pick the best apps

by Milos Topic on April 24, 2009

As I’m in the middle of setting up my new work laptop I have some choices to make. I need to pick two apps, one for Twitter and the other as my main IM client.

When it comes to Twitter, I normally use the web but am now in need of more features. I need support for multiple accounts as well as grouping of followers. I’ve narrowed it down to TweetDeck (grouping of followers) and twhirl (multiple accounts), unfortunately neither one of them has both features (or am I wrong?). Which one would you recommend and why?

On the other hand, when it comes to the IM client my current options are between Digsby (seems to do everything), Trillian (I’ve been using it for years, simple and works) and Pidgin (It’s on of the greatest IM clients ever, plus I’ve been using it for our in-house chat server). Which one would you recommend and why?

For both of these categories please feel free to suggest some other clients not mentioned here which you found to be reliable, secure and efficient.

Thank you! :)

tweetdeck is pretty cool.

on windows i love pidgin. it’s simple, lightweight, and is updated with great regularity.

I like using real birds to send messages to my friends. When the weather’s bad, though, I use Tweetdeck. I also use Pidgin. I guess that makes Adam and I twins. What what.

I agree with Pidgin 100%, it’s been flawless (since Gaim days actually). However, I actually installed Digsby and am giving it a try as I heard people talk about it, but haven’t used it yet.

Still haven’t picked a Twitter client, but am leaning towards TweetDeck as well.

Thank you both!
